Metformin is a big topic in the anti-aging scene. In a study from 2019, the following 'cocktail' of substances proved to be highly effective anti-aging:
1. 0.015 mg of hGH
2.50 mg of DHEA
3.500 mg of metformin
4.3000 iu of Vit D
5. 50 mg of Zinc
However, these are very 'special' ingredients, some of which have significant side effects, such as: B. the growth hormone (hGH = human growth hormone) or the hormone DHEA (on the list of banned substances in Switzerland...).
And metformin is also part of this cocktail.
Metformin, originally made from French lilac, is used to control and treat high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. It is one of the main medications used to treat this condition and has been prescribed to over 120 million people worldwide.
Prof. David Sinclair, on whose research most of the substances offered in our shop are based, recommends metformin as the safest drug in the history of medicine. But Metformin requires a prescription - and some, e.g. B. the author of this text, who have a digestive system that is prone to problems, react sensitively.
It's reassuring that there is an alternative to metformin, and Prof. Sinclair even recommends this alternative. Although berberine and metformin are structurally different, they share many benefits. Both regulate blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes.
Berberine is a compound typically found in various plants such as barberry, oregan grape, turmeric, phellodendron and turmeric. It has a bright yellow color and is often used as a dye.
It is used in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the Traditional Indian Ayurveda system of medicine to treat wounds, gastrointestinal disorders and microbial infections. It is an antioxidant (that is, it prevents damage to our cells caused by free radicals) and also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
What role does berberine play in anti-aging?
Like metformin, berberine is able to regulate blood sugar levels, but above all to activate the longevity pathway AMPK, which is the 'master switch of metabolism', in weight loss help and even fight cancer. All of these benefits make berberine a highly effective dietary supplement for slowing the aging process and increasing longevity.
Summary of the current state of knowledge from 2020.
As with all (anti-aging) substances, the bioavailability of berberine is of course of outstanding importance. The company EFFEPHARM (they also produce the UTHEVER-NMN, see the corresponding category in our shop) has developed a process to increase the bioavailability of food supplements and
